Learning CallXML 3.0

Overview

Introduction to CallXML: If you are new to learning CallXML 3.0, (and who isn't?), then this is the first place that you'll want to look. This subsection will give you a broad overview of the CallXML markup in comparison to both HTML and to VoiceXML so that you'll have your feet firmly planted for the first Lesson: Helloworld 1!

Container Element Aliases and Inheritance: Starting off with the basics of container elements and how you can use them to encapsulate your application execution into logical groups, this section then delves into how you can use our new aliases to 'brand' these container elements to suit your coding style. Last, we cover how child elements inherit values from their containers,illustrating you how can simply your applications even more.

Recognizing User Input New with CallXML 3.0 is the ability to recognize voice input, greatly expanding the range of possibilities for your applications. In our tutorial, we show you how to create apps that recognize a user's voice commands using CallXML 3.0s compact grammar syntax.

Document Navigation: In this section, we detail how you can use the <goto> element to navigate to a container 'anchor' based on user input and other events.

External Document Navigation: Exapanding on the concept of using <goto> to navigate to different portions of executable content, we now show how to link seperate documents, thereby rounding out our knowledge of CallXML and document transitions.

Recording Audio: We now touch upon the basics of recording audio within the CallXML framework. This section will cover the do's and don'ts of enabling your application with 'recorder' functions, and the accompanying Lesson will show us how to create a CallXML-based answering machine.

Introduction to CallerID: The preface to understanding outbound dialing, this chapter in the annals of CallXML Arcana will give us insider information on CallerID and CalledID capture, and show us how we can use this to our advantage within our applications. And it's fat-free, too! How can you resist?

Introduction to Call Bridging: Ah yes. The holiest of holies, Call Bridging is covered here. When we want the skinny on creating a CallXML application with outbound dialing capabilities, this is the first place to look. This section contains valuable tips and hints, that will give you a leg up on The Competition.

Introduction to Token Calls:Once we have mastered the methods of making outbound calls, you will doubtlessly want to learn all you can about the coolest of all cool features: Token Initiated Calls. Not sure? Then we'll tempt you. After reading this section, and following the Lesson presented therein, you will be able to click a button on a web page, and have it call out to whomever you want, except maybe Jim Morrison. Elvis, however, is still fair game.

Introduction to Xpath: Probably the neatest addition to the CallXML 3.0 arsenal is the ability to use XPath to fetch and format data returned from XML nodes. In this section, we will give you a brief primer on how we can use XPath markup to our advantage.

An Introduction to Server Side Languages: Broad in scope, sweeping in breathtaking vision, this section will show you the basics of cache control, and covers empowering your CallXML code with ColdFusion, ASP, or PHP. Recommended for those who feel the need to wax complicated, or those who simply want More out of their CallXML applications.
