Appendix F: Outbound Dialing

Overview

• Postdialing: The proliferation of the standard office PBX system means that we need a way to programmatically dial an extension with our applications. Since CCXML 1.0 has no inherent way of doing this 'out of the box', we turn to the Voxeo-specific 'dtmf' dialog type extension for this chore. The overview and working sample code contained in this document demonstrates how we can use this extension to the specification to our advantage whenever we need to reach a specific extension with no fuss, and no muss.
  


• Limiting Call Length: Unless you want your customers to be able to talk indefinitely, there will come a time where you might want to put a cap on how long your users will be allowed to chat. In the example presented in this section, we show how one can use the <send> element to create a call timer that will allow you to limit conference duration.
  


• Duplex Conferencing: Not sure what a duplex is? Well, you probably aren't in the minority. However, understanding duplexing is key to being able to make an 'eavesdropping' application that allows one party to monitor the call and not be heard by other conference participants. We will detail exactly how you can use a half-duplex conference to accomplish this 'call monitoring' goal in this document, replete with the downloadable sample code that you have come to expect from us.
  


• Answering Machine Detection: Possibly the most useful subsection in this category, this will detail how you can take advantage of the Call Progress Analyzer feature of the Voxeo networks to effectively detect answering machines versus humans when placing a call.
  


• Conferencing with Whisper: Need to send a message to your call recipient before they get connected? Easy as pie. In this section, we will cover the methods that you'll need to employ when adding this feature in your application. Easy to read instructions, and downloadable sample code will help you include this feature with no hassle at all. Batteries Not Included.
  


• Join and Unjoin via Termdigits: Here we run through the 'voxeo-termdigits' extension to the <join> element, and show you how you can return a conference participant to a 'hold' state with the press of a DTMF key. Ideal for 'conference moderator' applications, this can be combined with the 'whisper' application to create a powerful, robust, conferencing solution.
  


• ANI Spoofing: This short subsection covers called and caller ID, and illustrates how you may effectively pass a user-defined callerID value for outbound calls.
